Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Ch. 1 I was starting to get the bug like Dean. He was essentially an adolescent enormously energized with life, and however he was a cheat, he was just conning in light of the fact that he needed such a great amount to live and to engage with individuals who might some way or another give no consideration to him. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 1 They moved down the lanes like dingledodies, and I shambled after as Ive been doing for my entire life after individuals who intrigue me, in light of the fact that the main individuals for me are the frantic ones, the ones who are distraught to live, distraught to talk, distraught to be spared, covetous of everything simultaneously, the ones that never yawn or state an ordinary thing, yet consume, consume, consume... Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 1 In addition, all my New York companions were in the negative, bad dream position of putting down society and giving their drained erudite or political or psychoanalytical reasons, yet Dean just hustled in the public eye, excited for bread and love. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 1 Some place along the line I knew thered be young ladies, dreams, everything; some place along the line the pearl would be given to me. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 3 What's more, as I stayed there tuning in to that sound of the night which bop has come to speak to for us all, I thought of my companions from one finish of the nation to the next and how they were actually all in the equivalent huge lawn accomplishing something so wild eyed and surging about. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 3 I woke up as the sun was blushing; and that was the one unmistakable time in my life, the weirdest snapshot of all, when I didnt know who I was-I was far away from home, spooky and tired with movement, in a modest lodging Id never observed, hearing the murmur of steam outside, and the squeak of the old wood of the inn, and strides upstairs, and all the pitiful sounds, and I took a gander at the broke high roof and truly didnt know who I was for around fifteen unusual seconds. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 7 The air was delicate, the stars so fine, the guarantee of each cobbled rear entryway so incredible, that I thought I was in a fantasy. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 9 They resembled the man with the cell stone and despair, ascending from the underground, the shameful fashionable people of America, another beat age that I was gradually joining. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 9 We smoldered and shouted in our mountain alcove, frantic tanked Americans in the relentless land. We were on the top of America and everything we could do was holler, I surmise over the night... Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 10 Young men and young ladies in America have such a miserable time together; complexity requests that they submit to sex quickly without legitimate fundamental talk. Not seeking talk-genuine straight discussion about spirits, forever is heavenly and each second is valuable. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 12 An agony cut my heart, as it did each time I saw a young lady I adored who was going the other way in this too-huge world. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 13 LA is the loneliest and generally ruthless of American urban communities; New York gets terrible cold in the winter yet theres a sentiment of wacky comradeship some place in certain roads. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 13 The stars twisted around the little rooftop; smoke jabbed from the flue smokestack. I smelled squashed beans and stew. The elderly person snarled... A California home; I stowed away in the grapevines, burrowing everything. I felt like a million dollars; I was adventuring in the insane American night. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 13 We turned at twelve paces, for affection is a duel, and took a gander at one another once and for all. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 1, Ch. 13 Isnt it genuine that you start your life a sweet kid, having faith in everything under your dads rooftop? At that point comes the day of the Laodiceans, when you realize you are pitiable and hopeless and poor and visually impaired and bare, and with the appearance of a frightful, lamenting phantom you go shivering through bad dream life. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 3 Whither goest thou, America, in thy sparkly vehicle in the night? Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 4 The one thing that we long for in our living days, that makes us murmur and moan and experience sweet sicknesses of assorted types, is the recognition of some lost ecstasy that was presumably knowledgeable about the belly and must be replicated (however we prefer not to let it out) in death. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 4 I like an excessive number of things and get all befuddled and hung-up running starting with one falling star then onto the next till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I didn't have anything to offer anyone aside from my own disarray. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 4 I need to resemble him. Hes never hung-up, he goes each course, he allows everything to all, he knows time, he has nothing to do except for rock to and fro. Man, hes the end! If you go like him all the time youll at long last get it. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 5 Life will be life, and kind will be benevolent. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 6 We were totally charmed, we as a whole acknowledged we were deserting disarray and babble and playing out our one respectable capacity of the time, move. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 6 Why consider that when all the brilliant grounds in front of you and a wide range of unexpected occasions hold up hiding to shock you and make you happy youre alive to see? Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 8 What is that feeling when youre heading out from individuals and they subside on the plain till you see their bits scattering?- its the too-tremendous world vaulting us, and its great by. In any case, we lean forward to the following insane endeavor underneath the skies. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 9 It appeared as though only minutes when we started abounding in the lower regions before Oakland and out of nowhere arrived at a tallness and saw loosened up in front of us the remarkable white city of San Francisco on her eleven spiritualist slopes with the blue Pacific and its propelling mass of potato-fix haze past, and smoke and goldenness of the late evening of time. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 10 What's more, for one minute I had arrived at the purpose of rapture that I generally needed to reach, which was the finished advance across sequential time into immortal shadows, and wonderment in the depressingness of the human domain, and the vibe of death kicking at my heels to proceed onward, with a ghost hounding its own heels... Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 10 I understood that I had kicked the bucket and been reawakened innumerable occasions yet just didnt recall on the grounds that the advances from life to death and back are so spooky simple, a mysterious activity to no end, such as nodding off and awakening again a million times, the articulate easygoing quality and profound numbness of it. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 3, Ch. 1 At lilac night I strolled with each muscle hurting among the lights of 27th and Welton in the Denver hued area, wanting to be a Negro, feeling that the best the white world had offered was insufficient delight for me, insufficient life, happiness, kicks, haziness, music, insufficient night. Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 3, Ch. 1 At that point a total quiet fell over everyone; where once Dean would have worked out, he currently fell quiet himself, yet remaining before everyone, worn out and broken and inept, directly under the lights, his hard frantic face secured with sweat and pounding veins... Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 3, Ch. 4 Sacred blossoms gliding noticeable all around, were all these drained countenances in the beginning of Jazz America. Choice and Individual Freedom in The Stranger (The Outsider) :: Camus Stranger Essays

Decision and Individual Freedom in The Stranger         Camus' The Stranger is a bleak calling that decision and person opportunity are vital parts of human instinct, and the responsibility and obligation that go with these components are at last the main variables of the ethical quality of one's existence.  Meursault is set in an impassive world, a world that grasps preposterousness and mistreats reason; such is the idea of existentialist conviction, that justification and rationale are eventually the pith of humankind, and that cultural feelings and a unimportant business as usual serve just to sustain a misguided feeling of truth.         Meursault's uprightness, just as his demise, lies in his special propensity to pick, and in this way exist, without figuring target measures or all inclusive sentiment.  His  aloof, true existentialism is an impetus for perpetual struggle between his legitimization and rationale based presence and that of others, which centers around a target membership to the standard ; such is obvious in warmed conversations with the judge and jail serve, who are seen as paragons of invalid rationale and the impetuous, semi enthusiastic quest for old similarity.         No windmills are slain1 in this reproduced presence; foolishness of a diverse kind commands the well known attitude, one which would estrange a man in light of his apparent impassion towards the commonplace, and attempt, convict, and execute a man dependent on his absence of indicated compassion towards the insignificant. Regard for the preliminary grouping will uncover that the key components of the conviction had little to do with the real wrongdoing Meursault had submitted, yet rather  the unspeakable abominations he had submitted while in grieving of his mother's demise, which comprised of smoking a cigarette, drinking some espresso, what's more, neglecting to cry or show up adequately distraught.  Indeed, the twisted misguided judgment of good truth which the jury [society] looks for depends on a segregated, target perception of right or wrong, in this way distorting the beliefs of equity by neglecting to perceive that individual flexibility and decision are ...the quintessence of individual presence and the main factor of one's morality.2         The execution of Meursault at the end of the novel emblematically brings

Role Of Beloved In The Novel - Free Essay Example

Beloved is the reason why everything in this novel transpires. Beloveds death caused the townspeople to stay away from 124, transmuted Sethe holistically, and the other characters too. Beloved scared the townspeople enough to not come close to the house since her death and reappearance. She also ruined Sethe by draining her energy and rewiring her emotionally. The other characters in the novel like Paul D and Denver were also greatly affected by Beloved. Sethe once free, was at 124 with all her children. One day Schoolteacher and other white men go to 124 to take Sethes kids and introduce them to slavery but Sethe does the unpredictable. She goes quickly to kill her children before Schoolteacher and the other white men arrive and take her children. She only has enough time to kill one and the unfortunate one is Beloved. Beloveds murder is what keeps everyone in town away from 124 even though they have great memories there. Thats why no one visits Sethe and Denver and they eventually become very antisocial and isolated from everyone. Later after Beloved returns from the dead, they are even more scared. That is why towards the end, a group of women come together at 124 to expel Beloved from there. They want to help Sethe and stop that deep feeling of emptiness and sor row that is felt just by passing by.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Beloved is the main reason why Sethe is the way she is. Sethe is guilty since she is the one that murdered Beloved. According to Sethe, she did it to save her from slavery and keep her safe. Since the occurrence, she feels guilty and the past has been haunting her the entire time, even when Beloved arrives at 124. That being said, Beloved takes advantage of Sethe in every way she sees possible. When she first arrives at 124, Sethe immediately feels an attachment towards her just by knowing her name. After Beloved is taken in by Sethe and given food, water, and shelter, Beloved begins to have an unhealthy and parasitical attachment towards her. She is constantly with Sethe and wont let her do much around the house. Coming towards the end of the novel, Sethe becomes Beloveds servant. Beloved seems to be unpleasable and have an abundant desire for food. Sethe loses her job and leaves chores at home undone in order to keep Beloved comfortable and fulfill her demands. She drains Sethes en ergy and food resources while Sethe and Denver eat almost nothing. Beloved becomes fat and weak as if she were pregnant from all the food she eats and Sethe provides her. Sethe becomes tired of Beloveds demands at times and tries to tell her how she suffered as a mother for her and the other children. Beloved seems to not be affected by Sethes words and reverses the entire conversation towards Sethe. Beloved blames her about leaving her behind and killing her. As Sethe hears that, she tries to explain why and tries to please her even more since she feels guilty for her actions. Beloved seems to win everytime and always gets what she wants. As we can see, Beloved has great power over Sethe in order to get what she wants. Beloved changes Sethe completely without her noticing. We can almost say that shes back into slavery but this time with her own child. Sethe doesnt seem to be the only character to be affected by Beloved and her actions. Paul D and Denver are both uncomforted by Beloved throughout the novel at different times. Paul D immediately feels perturbed when seeing Beloved for the first time and later on, just by being around her. Its inexplicable. Paul D one day feels the urge to leave the house because of great uncomfort but doesnt want to leave forever because he actually loves Sethe and wants to stay with her. Because of that he goes to sleep at the cold house but Beloved goes and seduces Paul D against his will. Paul D has sex with Beloved but he didnt want to. He later leaves 124 in order to get away from everything that has to do with Beloved and Sethes past. Denver on the other hand is impacted by Beloved differently but ends up with the same result. When Beloved arrived at 124, Denver became attached to Beloved thinking she was the reincarnation of her sister. Denver began to ignore and not care about Denver while Denver was on her tail at all times. This whole time Denver believes Sethe is the problem because she killed Beloved in the first place and as time passes by Beloved and Sethe begin to fight constantly. We can see right here that Beloved is such a strong and manipulative character that she can put a family against each other. Times passes by and Denver sees that its all the way around. Beloved is the problem and Sethe is the victim. Beloved had Denver blinded thinking her ow n mother was the problem. Somehow, Denver wasnt able to see Beloveds manipulations towards her mother and Paul D.

American Civil Rights Through The Ages Over the course of history, all across the world there have been countless incidents where one group of people has persecuted another, for little or no reason. One of the worst instances of this happening was in the 1800s in America when people kept thousands of African Americans as slaves. Slavery in the Americas caused Africans Americans to be considered an inferior race for over a century later. For all this time, African Americans were forced into slave labor, then forced to have their own everything such as schools, churches, and even bathrooms. It all started when European traders began buying or kidnapping African Americans from their home villages and shipping them to Europe and the Americas. On the journey, they were starved, beaten, and packed into the bowels of the ship. The captain’s only concern was finding a way to squeeze a few more slaves into the ship to maximize profits. Money was the only thing that mattered. They would spare any expense they thought that they could get away with without killing their precious human cargo. They were only allowed one or two hours on the deck of the ship each day, taken in shifts, so that they wouldn’t be too weak to sell when they got to the new world. Disease was also a large factor. In such tight quarters, in which they would often have to use as a bathroom, disease spread like wildfire through the slaves. If one got sick, then everyone around them would, too. The developers at times do not take care of the type of content that they should incorporate in the games and also the accessibility of the same is not controlled leading to their usage by the individuals belonging to the minor age group. Usage of such games by the kids and minors is a violation of ethical practices that takes a toll on the mental and psychological abilities of the users (Albrecht, Michael and Michael, 2016). Security Risks in Online Gaming With the increase in the number and ease of accessibility of the online games along with the increase of the usage of the same leads to a number of security risks associated with the games. The attackers succeed in obtaining personal information associated with the users through unauthorized manners which leads to the violation of the confidentiality, privacy and integrity of the same. There are also apps that need to be purchased or involve in-app purchases. Attackers also get hold of the payment information of the users that can have extremely severe impacts. These security risks can also lead to the deterioration of the reputation of the developers and the organization that provides these games to the users. The customer base and market shares also therefore come down as a result of these risks. These security risks primarily involve availability risks, integrity risks and confidentiality attacks such as denial of service attacks, media alteration, phishing attacks, scams, malware attacks and many others. There are also some of the games that determine the user location and the attackers acquire the same for executing physical security attacks such as stealing of device or harm to the device owner. Countermeasures to Security Risks There are a number of measures that the users and the game developers shall take to minimize these security risks. The users shall not click on any suspicious links and shall consider the reviews and comments before downloading a particular game. The payment processes must be carried out in a secure environment and the device must always be kept protected with the anti-virus and other anti malware packages. The developers must install security mechanisms in the games during the development of the same in order to protect the information of the users. Conclusion Online gaming is an activity that has been developed as a source of entertainment for the users. The usage and incorporation of the same in daily activities shall therefore be restricted so that the same does not turn in to a hazard or result in negative impacts. There are numerous positives that are associated with the games and the same shall be maintained all throughout. There shall also be monitoring and control applied by the parents to prevent the children from excessive usage and addiction. References Albrecht, K., Michael, M. and Michael, K. (2016). Overcoat By Ghulam Abbas and The Blue Donkey By Suniti Namjoshi Essay Example

Overcoat By Ghulam Abbas and The Blue Donkey By Suniti Namjoshi Essay The Overcoat and The Blue Donkey are about how people tend to stereotype people by their outward appearance; societies see the outer shell of people and immediately make a judgement without looking deeper. People are rejected because of their appearance; both stories are about how appearances can be misleading. The story Overcoat is about a young man who dresses smartly, neatly and is well groomed in order to conform with the society. In contrast, The Blue Donkey is about a blue donkey that lives in the neighbourhood of the Red Bridge Society, where she is rejected because of her bright blue skin. We can recognize Overcoat is a fable since the characters in Overcoat do not have names, only the names of the street are mentioned. For instance, Charing Cross, Lawrence Garden, Mc Leod Road etc, are used to make it sound more like a true story. The young man is walking through some Asian city, we can recognize this by the people n the story such as, Tonga-wallas, Pan wallas etc and the money used in India and Pakistan is Anna. I think the fable is supposed to be set in Lahore because the writer comes from Lahore. In comparison, we can identify The Blue Donkey as certainly a fable as it begins with Once Upon A Time. They usually illustrate a proverb or a well known saying. The Blue Donkey is more obviously a fable since the central character is an animal that talks. The red bridge society in The Blue Donkey could be anywhere in the world there are no details of background at all or the names of the characters. These two stories are fables. They are stories with a moral behind it, which teaches us about human nature. In both stories the characters are extremely isolated, they stand out from the society around them. In Overcoat, the young mans smartness and elegance stand out from the society around him. His hair was sleek and shining and he wore side burns. His thin moustache seemed to been drawn with a moustache. He had on a brown overcoat with a cream coloured half opened rose in his buttonhole and a green felt hat which he wore at a rakish angle. A white scarf was knotted at his neck. One of his hands was slipped into a pocket of his overcoat while in the other he held a short polished cane which every now and then he twirled jauntily In comparison, in The Blue Donkey the donkeys blueness stands out and troubles the red bridge society although the blue donkey herself thinks she is a fine donkey. The citizens say to her: Your blueness troubles us Overcoat starts positively although it ends negatively. Which is in direct contrast to theThe Blue Donkey. The young man in Overcoat is first treated respectfully, courteously and with consideration. Traders are eager to sell their wares and render their service to the young man. Tonga wallas on catching sight of him raced towards him as they thought they would get some business from him as he looked rich, however the young man turned away from them. The young man later on went to a western music shop where he lifted the cover of the piano and played a few notes as if he was an expert. A salesman came up, Good evening sir he said courteously, Can I help you sir? The young man is treated courteously and respectfully. If he came in as his real self, beneath the overcoat, the salesman would not have spoken to him politely, he might not have allowed him in the shop let alone touching the piano. When the young man went into the Persian carpet shop, the carpet dealer greeted him warmly and this shop dealer also addressed him as sir. The carpet dealer offered to take the carpet off the wall and he was prepared to reduce the price of the carpet to the minimum. However, the young man walked away and told the carpet dealer that he would come some other time. As the young man was injured by the truck full of bricks. Two or three people who witnessed this shouted: Stop him . . . take the number The witnesses were concerned and eager to help the young man. When the young man was taken into the operating theatre, there was blood all over his clothes. Someone with sympathy put his felt hat on his chest so he would not lose it. The nurses feeling remorseful said: All togged up for Saturday night, poor chap. Did they catch his driver? No he got away What a pity! Now the nurses were taking the young mans clothes off. They exchanged glances after taking the young mans scarf off. Beneath the scarf there was neither a tie nor a collar not even a shirt. When the overcoat was being taken off there was a sweater full of holes, through the holes a dirty vest was seen which was worse than the sweater. It was as if the young man had not had a bath for at least two months. Layers of dirt covered the body. Only the part that could be seen by the public was well powdered and clean, the rest was filthy. After the vest, it was the trousers turn to come off. Again the eyes of the nurses met The trousers were securely bound at the hips by an old cloth that looked like an old tie. The shoes and the socks had to come off now. The shoes were old but were polished clean. As for the socks, they were different in colour and pattern from each other. There were holes in the socks from which the filth could be seen. Before the clothes had been taken off, his face was toward the ceiling but slowly it had turned toward the wall as his clothes had been taken off as if in shame for what he really was under his mask. Was it perhaps for the shame of this dual nakedness of body and soul that now he dared not face his fellow beings? The story ends pathetically with the few items in the young mans pocket, A small black comb, a handkerchief, six annas and a few pies, a half smoked cigarette, a little diary in which the names and addresses of a few people were noted, a list of gramophone records and a few handbills which distributors had thrust upon him during his evening promenade. In contrast, The Blue Donkey starts negatively and ends positively. Both parties first reject her. Her skin colour was different and so they rejected her. The councillors who governed the town said: A donkey who lives by our bright red bridge has to be of the purest and silkiest white or we must request that the said donkey be required to move on. The second party thought it was unfair asking the donkey to be the silkiest white because she was never white and she could never be white. However, this party thought it would be better if she turned herself grey, as it would be better so no one will be offended. The first party thought the donkey was being blue on purpose. The two parties use various arguments to cover up their intolerance and racism. Both parties went to the blue donkey and asked her to turn into an inoffensive grey, the donkey did not moan that she was blue but instead she said: Cant and wont The first party barked out that she was being stubborn. The donkey confused then said: I am a perfectly good donkey The donkey didnt mind being blue and eating pink carrots although this troubled the red bridge society as the carrots clashed horribly with the bright red bridge and they spitefully told the blue donkey that they didnt want a bright blue donkey living near the red bridge. Although most of them got used to the donkey being blue and they did not notice it any more. There were still a couple more who thought the donkey was being blue on purpose. Sometimes there were those who brought her blue flowers as they thought, That the blue donkey was herself therefore beautiful They finally admired her difference and they respected it. The story ends positively with acceptance unlike Overcoat. The young man in Overcoat has a poor self-image. He knows he will not be accepted so he changes his identity. He does not like being different he spends a lot of time on being smart he plucks his moustache so carefully that it looks as if it is dr awn with a pencil. The young man is ashamed of being his true self. He is not self confident. In direct contrast, The Blue Donkey likes herself just as she is. She is self-confident The Blue Donkey does not hesitate to say she does not want to be blue but instead she says, cant and wont. She knows she is a perfectly good donkey and she does not change because of what the society says and what she looks like from the outside. The Blue Donkey likes to flaunt her blueness as she is different and she does not mind been solitary and inferior. The blue donkey does not hide her blueness she would rather be blue than be with the crowd. The style of each story is different. The story Overcoat has a plot as we follow his promenade through the town meeting different traders and different people. We listen to some of the conversations the man has with some of these traders. It reaches a climax with the accident and there is a lot more action at that point. There is a lot of description ,adjectives and adverbs to describe peoples apperance. The owner of the shop, wearing a long robe and a silk turban, greeted him warmly. There are many people the young man meets. There is a mixture of long and short sentences and a mixture of long and short paragraphs too. There are two parts to the story first where he is accepted by the traders and people before the accident. Later on in the operating theatre he is rejected by the nurses. In The Blue Donkey there are very few descriptions of people and there are very few adjectives the only adjectives. The only adjectives used are to do with colour, A donkey who lives by our bright red bridge must be of the purest and silkiest white or we must request that the said donkey be required to move on The story itself is plain and brief. There are very few adverbs and the story itself has simple style. No plot develops and there are arguments rather than actions. The language of the political parties is pompous and formal because they are superior being white or think they are. There are only long paragraphs in the entire story in which the longest is twenty-five lines long. This story has also two parts, first where she is rejected and told to move on if she is not of the purest or silkiest white and later on when she is given blue flowers, as she was beautiful because she was herself. Societies should not judge people for what they look like on top without looking deeper, like the people in Overcoat who judged the young man to be wealthy as in the end he was a pauper who just wore an overcoat so he could fit in with the society and so he would not be rejected. I think this story resembles the saying, All that glitters isnt gold The young man in Overcoat deceives himself by judging others by their outward appearance when he is covering his true self just like the society around him, It was their clothes rather than their faces that attracted his attention. The donkey in the story represents old aged pensioners, disabled people, ethnic minorities, poor people, foreigners, coloured people as the story is about prejudice and the refusal to accept people for what they really are. In the end the blue donkey is accepted, she did not mind looking different from the society. She didnt do what the society said but she did what she thought was good for her. I think this story resembles the saying, Dont judge a book by its cover. Like the red bridge society, we tend to jump to conclusions and stereotype. People are too quick to judge and reject anyone who is different. This discrimination and intolerance can easily lead to war.

HIV Paper essays

HIV Paper essays In today's high tech world major problems still exist. The problem that is looked at the most is Terrorism. However, there is a problem that has killed and is still killing far more people than terrorism ever has. That problem is HIV/ AIDS. This virus has killed so many people that it is considered by many to be a pandemic. This disease has devastated places like the North America, Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia. The reason that the disease has devastated so many people is because of a lack of knowledge and education on how to deal with the disease and because many high ranking politicians and other people try to downplay it severity. For these reasons the disease has had such a crushing effect on many countries. The HIV virus has two types. The first one type is HIV-1, which is the main cause of AIDS worldwide. The second type is HIV-2, which is found mostly in West Africa. People can get this disease three ways: having intercourse with an infected person, sharing needles with an infected person (or contact with an infected person's blood on an open wound), and transfer of the virus from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or through breast-feeding. Those are the only ways that that the virus can be contacted through other people. This disease works by attacking a person's immune system, mainly the white blood cells (CD4 cells). By attacking the immune system it makes a person extremely vulnerable to other diseases, viruses, and infection which the body can normally fight off. Through computer technology scientists determined that the HIV virus originated in about 1930 in rural areas of Central Africa. The virus started to spread in the 1960's and 1970's because people had to migrate to other places because of wars, droughts, and famines. By 1978 the virus had reached the United States. Starting in June of 1981, the Center for Disease Control published reports about gay men in New York and...

Law of Evidence - Reliability and relevance Essay

Law of Evidence - Reliability and relevance - Essay Example Evidence can only be deemed to be relevant if it is used to prove or disprove a matter that is in issue before the court. Evidence adduced with the intention of causing the jury to disapprove of the defendant is generally inadmissible, unless it is properly presented as evidence of bad character to show the propensity of the defendant to a particular kind of crime. Since scientific evidence is a specific area of expertise it is essential that the person giving evidence relating to scientific findings is suitably qualified, and that the evidence can be relied upon in order to secure a conviction. It is not always easy to draw a distinction between a person who is giving an expert opinion as opposed to evidence of fact1 . The Criminal Procedure Rules 1998 (CPR) were reformed in order to restrict the usage of expert evidence2. CPR r 35.1 states that ‘expert evidence shall be restricted to that which is reasonably required to resolve the proceedings.’ One of the dangers asso ciated with the reliance of expert opinion is that miscarriages of justice may occur as a direct result. ... This case was very similar to R v Clark (no2) [2003]4 in which the evidence of the same expert used in the Cannings case was regarded as reliable, resulting in the conviction of Clark for the murder of her 2 children. Professor Meadow, the expert in these cases was at the time carrying out a government funded report into the causes of sudden infant death. At the trial Professor Meadow made the observation that the chances of 2 children dying of cot death within Clark’s family situation could be compared to the chances of 4 different horses winning the Grand National in consecutive years at odds of 80 to 1. As a result of the elevated status of Professor Meadow as an expert in this field the jury concluded that the deaths could not have been natural causes. The courts have struggled consistently with the testing of expert evidence as there is no compulsory requirement for accreditation of the qualifications of the expert. There is also a lack of training for judges and barriste rs in the understanding of expert evidence, as well as training in judging the reliability of such evidence. In a report conducted by the House of Commons into the reliability of expert forensic evidence the report expressed concern that when the Forensic Science Service moved to the private sector the police service would no longer be able to ask the FSS to ‘provide advice as to the reliability of forensic techniques5.’ At present there is no control over the testing of the reliability of expert witnesses, however, the Law Commission have recently tried to address this issue in the Criminal Evidence (experts) Bill which was published 22 March 20116. In this Bill it was recommended that a reliability based admissibility test should be established for

Now Andreas is in dilemma whether to go back to Germany so that he can stay with his family and accept the position awarded by the headquarters or to stay back and work in the same level. Impact on the People of Nigeria by Muslims, French and British Essay

Africans have been migrating through out the continent, including Nigeria, long before there was even written record. Because of this, there has always been an extensive amount of inter-mingling between various ethnic groups, making it difficult to actually trace back who came from where. Aside from this amalgamation, there has been a huge impact on the peoples of Nigeria by outside forces. In particular, three major groups that had a major impact were Muslim merchants from across the Sahara, British slave traders and eventual colonizers, and the French and British Christian missionaries. The combination of these three groups has had both an economic and cultural impact on Nigeria that is still present today. External penetration of Nigeria started as early as the 9th century AD when Muslim merchants from western Sudan, Maghreb, Tripolitania and Egypt started traveling across the Sahara with camel caravans in search of trade. Over the course of the next six centuries, Islam became accepted widely in the north, especially among the Hausa and Fulani, and not only as a religion. It also imposed a central government, segregated the sexes, influenced language and script, and established a hierarchical class system that was not there beforehand. Islam did not spread south because of the dense tropical forest that divides Nigeria into north and south. This also caused the two regions to â€Å"develop† at different rates because while the south was still alien to Europeans, the north was expanding culturally and economically because of its deep involvement with the trans-Sahara trade routes. The peoples of the south remained untouched by Europeans until the 1470’s when Portuguese explorers, under the inspiration and guidance of Henry the Navigator, arrived and traded spirits, cloth, guns and gunpowder for slaves. The Portuguese did not really have much of a cultural effect on the indigenous people (besides the slowly diminishing population). This is because they rarely traveled farther than the coast, if they even left the ships. Eventually the British ships were dropping anchor along Nigeria’s coast after Britain realized the extent of the profits the Portuguese were making and what they could reap from slavery. By 1712 they had established a slave monopoly along the west coast. Chiefs and African slave traders brought slaves to shipside in exchange for Eu... ...t of Nigerians resorted to migration when fighting didn’t work. It is ironic how when one country tries to take over another in a forceful manner, it is met by some form of resistance but if the country introduces itself through trade it is accepted with open arms. The Muslims did not intend to rule over anyone. They were there to make deals and trade goods. Muslim conversion was gradual and voluntary and spanned over six centuries. There is little evidence about wars between Muslims and Nigerians. Also, many Nigerians are proud to be part of the Muslim culture in the north, even if they are from the south, because of its historical tradition, distinctive architecture, useful language, Islamic faith and because it is an alternative to white European culture. The British were the ones that forcefully took people’s land and family members. They were accepted at first, but they betrayed the trust of the people and exploited them for Britain’s gain for over 400 years. Many educated Nigerians today feel that if it weren’t for the slave trade and colonialism, they would be living in a much more modern and progressive country at this time. It is no wonder that they resent the British.

Gun control has been a controversial issue for years Essay

â€Å"Gun control has been a controversial issue for years. A vast majority of citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection, or even for the pleasure of hunting. These people are penalized for protecting their lives, or even for enjoying a common, innocent sport. To enforce gun control throughout the nation means violating a persons Constitutional rights. Although some people feel that the issue of gun control will limit crime, the issue should not exist due to the fact that guns are necessary for self defense against crime, and by enforcing gun control is violating a citizen’s second amendment right to bear arms. † Another examples of an argumentative essay comes from Bogazici University:†Throw out the bottles and boxes of drugs in your house. A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at leastcome as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. However, it is a blow to the medicine industry, and an evenbigger blow to our confidence in the progress of science. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips: we can be healthy by doing Reikion on a regular basis. † On Essay By Example, on the other hand, the sample argumentative essay addresses online games and socialization: â€Å"Online games aren’t just a diversion, but a unique way to meet other people. As millions of gamers demonstrate, playing online is about friendship and cooperation, not just killing monsters. These games are a viable social network because players focus on teamwork, form groups with like-minded people and have romantic relationships with other players. â€Å"Massively-Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) feature millions of players interacting in the same environment. The games are social in nature as they allow players to band together and complete missions based on a story line, or test their skills by fighting against each other. At the start of the game, the user creates a fictional character, and customizes its physical appearance. Since many games involve combat, players also outfit their characters with armor and weapons, as well as choose their â€Å"profession. † Many popular game titles like World of Warcraft and Everquest follow a fantasy theme, so most professions have magical abilities like healing other players or raising undead minions. While the process seems simple, players may spend hours agonizing over the perfect look for their character, from their armor color to the type of skills to use in battle. Once their character is created, the player is free to explore the vast, digital world and interact with other players; however they must pay on average $15 a month for game content. MMOG users are mostly male – usually between the ages of 18-34 – although titles like World of Warcraft have a healthy population of female players as well. With millions of players, there are plenty of people to adventure with. † The key to learning to write a good essay is to read and study other essays and then practice, practice, rewrite and practice some more.

Multiple Literacies in the Classroom Tips & Strategies

Traditionally, literacy has referred to the ability to read and write. A literate person can communicate effectively through writing and assimilate information from reading. However, in today’s technology-driven world, the word literacy has expanded to encompass an ability to communicate effectively and absorb information through a variety of mediums. The term multiple literacies (also called new literacies or multi-literacies) recognizes that there are many ways to relay and receive information, and students need to be proficient in each one. Types of Literacy The four primary areas of aptitude are visual, textual, digital, and technological literacy. Each literacy type is described below. Visual Literacy Visual literacy refers to an individual’s ability to understand and evaluate information presented through images such as pictures, photographs, symbols, and videos. Visual literacy means going beyond simply looking at the image; it involves assessing the message the image is trying to convey or the feelings it is designed to evoke. Developing strong visual literacy involves teaching students to observe and analyze images. They should be trained to observe the image as a whole and note what they see. Then, they should think about its purpose. Is it meant to inform? Entertain? Persuade? Finally, students should learn to infer the image’s significance. Visual literacy also includes a student’s ability to express himself effectively through digital media. That doesn’t mean that all students will become artists, but one practical application is a student’s ability to put together a visual presentation that accurately and effectively communicates information. Textual Literacy Textual literacy is what most people would associate with the traditional definition of literacy. At a basic level, it refers to a person’s ability to assimilate written information, such as literature and documents, and to communicate effectively in writing. However, textual literacy goes beyond merely reading information. Students must be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate what they’ve read. Textual literacy skills include the ability to put what is read into context, evaluate it, and challenge it, if necessary. Analyzing and responding to books, blogs, news articles, or websites through reports, debates, or persuasive or opinion essays is one way to build a students textual literacy. Digital Literacy Digital literacy refers to an individual’s ability to locate, evaluate, and interpret information found through digital sources, such as websites, smartphones, video games. Students must learn to evaluate digital media critically and determine if a source is credible, identify the author’s point of view, and determine the author’s intent. Help students learn to recognize satire by providing samples from spoof websites such as The Onion or Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. Older students will also benefit from reading a variety of opinion and news articles in order to determine which ones contain the least bias. Technological Literacy Technological literacy refers to a person’s ability to use a variety of technologies (such as social media, online video sites, and text messages) appropriately, responsibly, and ethically. A technologically literate student understands not only how to navigate digital devices, but also how to do so safely while protecting his privacy and that of others, obeying copyright laws, and respecting the diversity of culture, beliefs, and opinions he will encounter. To develop their technological literacy skills, assign your students projects that require online research. Utilizing Multiple Literacies in the Classroom Teaching multiple literacies requires teachers to understand technology themselves. Teachers should look for ways to engage with their colleagues in the technology that their students are using, such as social media, blogging, and gaming. In addition, teachers must provide opportunities for students to develop multiple literacies in the classroom. Students should learn to locate, evaluate, and process information and communicate what they have learned to others. Try these tips for integrating multiple literacies in the classroom. Create Engaging Classroom Activities Engage in activities to promote visual literacy, such as Five Card Flickr. Provide students with five random photos or images. Ask them to write a word associated with each image, name a song that reminds them of each image, and describe what all of the images have in common. Then, invite the students to compare their answers with those of their classmates. Diversify Text Media Provide a variety of ways for students to interact with text, such as books in print, audio, and electronic formats. You may wish to allow students to listen to an audiobook while following along in the print version. Try posting infographics where students can read them or allowing time for students to listen to podcasts. Provide Access to Digital Media Ensure that students have opportunities to access a variety of digital media for collecting and creating information. Students may wish to read blogs or websites or watch videos on YouTube or streaming services to research topics of interest. Then, they can create a blog, video, or other digital media presentation to relay what they learn. In 5th through 8th grades, prepare students for high school and beyond by allowing them to choose a topic to research for the semester or year. Guide students in learning to read web pages, identify the author, determine the credibility of the information, and cite sources. Students should then use digital media (or a combination of digital and print) to create a presentation on their topic. Use Social Media If your students are 13 and older, consider setting up a classroom Twitter account or a Facebook group. Then, use it to communicate with your students and to model the safe, responsible, and ethical use of social media. Multiple Literacies Resources for Students Apart from classroom integration, there are many resources for students to develop multiple literacies. Students will naturally use many of these resources, such as gaming, the Internet, and social media outlets. Many libraries now recognize multiple literacies and offer resources for students, such as free computer and Internet access, e-books and audiobooks, tablet access, and digital media workshops. Students can also use free tools that are available on their smartphones, digital devices, or computers to explore multiple literacies. Some suggestions include: iMovie for video creationGarageBand for creating podcasts, music, or sound effectsGoogle products such as Docs, Sheets, and SlidesApple Podcasts on  iPhone and Stitcher or Spotify on Android for accessing podcastsMicrosoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
